The gentle sway of the hammock in the garden was soothing. The late afternoon sun was beginning to dip, but the air remained warm and balmy. Amelia closed her eyes, listening to the birdsong and the distant sounds of traffic, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin.

"A parrot?" Ben's voice jolted her slightly. He was staring at her with wide eyes. "Absolutely not. Think of the noise! And the mess!"

Amelia opened her eyes, watching the leaves rustle in the gentle breeze. “They're intelligent and fun, Ben," she said quietly, her voice still measured. "We've talked about getting a pet for months." Ben did not look convinced. She wondered if she'd ever convince him.
